We've stopped shouting at the telly to make these things so promise you'll try to enjoy 'em.

Chaka Khan – a gem from an angel

chakaIs there any choice but to be a fan of Chaka Khan? Almost every woman in the business who considers themselves ‘a Diva’ bows when she walks on stage to guest with them. On one such occasion Mary J Blige once shouted ‘she’s my reason, my reason’. But it’s not only the pop kiddies who dig her. The respect she is shown by (often snooty) Jazz musicians is as solid and this is rare for a singer who doesn’t play an instrument. In the jazz arena, singers are typically viewed as fluff who entertain the non musicians in the audience and fill in the unimportant bits between the solos.

to quote Sting’s introduction, with whom he has had a long association, “…and in the opinion of many, the best drummer in the world, Vinnie Colaiuta”.

The video is possibly my favourite Chaka tune ‘Love me still’ co-written with Bruce Hornsby and is from a ‘Jazz Central’ special so it’s obviously a jazz gig and thus the band are some very hep cats indeed. (More of them after and the full concert the jump). Look out for drummer Vinnie Colaiutas face, visible throughout the whole gig over Chakas shoulder, his reactions are priceless, he looks like a fan who is digging the gig as much as anyone else, lovely player, lovely man.

As promised more about the band and the whole jazz gig, yes, I am spoiling you. These boys are some of the best session players and busiest dudes on the block.

Vincent Colaiuta (born February 5, 1956) is an LA based American drummer. He is notable for his technical skill and his musical versatility, having played with many artists from a wide variety of genres; to quote Sting’s introduction, with whom he has had a long association, “…and in the opinion of many, the best drummer in the world, Vinnie Colaiuta”. He’s played on all Frank Zappa albums in the last two decades and also with everyone who is everyone too.
