The greatest ever cover version of Feelings – is by Les Dawson

les-dawson-music-blogI once met a girl who was to become a very good friend and I knew I would love her dearly when once on mentioning Les Dawsons name, she instantly said ‘ooh I do miss him’ and I knew exactly what she meant. Les died suddenly of a heart attack in 1993 and the UK lost one of it’s comedy greats. King of the deadpan, Les was actually a very talented pianist and baritone singer, but it’s typical of the man that he used it to get laughs and so he did.

His bum notes whether on the piano or as in this clip with his voice, were perfectly worked out to get the most clash per crotchet.

This wasn’t the usual musical idiot schtick either, typical of the mainly Jewish vaudeville acts, when Les did it, he did it well and in his own way. It may be an old joke, but aren’t they all? It’s never the sausage that sells a gag, it’s all about the sizzle.

His bum notes whether on the piano or as in this clip with his voice, were perfectly worked out to get the most clash per crotchet. The sincerity on his face hardly changes when he barges into them and this is what makes it special, this is what makes it more than just a musical hall gag.

In the clip below, only some way into the cacophony does his face let on that he is aware there is something not right, he makes us wait for it and then takes it away. However the line ‘you’ll never come again’ is harmonically, pure musical genius and for this and all the other reasons, I too, miss him to this day, God Bless you Les.
